2nd South Africa-Joint Institute of Nuclear Research Workshop on Theory and Computation

Nelson Mandela University
Summerstrand South Campus, Gqeberha, South Africa
December 5-8, 2023

Background

In 2005, the Republic of South Africa (RSA) and the Russian Federation (RF) signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) that led to South Africa becoming an associate member of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR). The agreement enables collaborations between the JINR scientists and researchers based in South African universities and research institutions. Currently, scientists from the RSA participate in various themes of the Topical Plan for JINR Research and International Cooperation associated with activities of all laboratories of the JINR. It covers the subjects of theoretical and experimental particle and nuclear physics, astrophysics and cosmology, condense matter physics, experimental research in the field of relativistic nuclear physics, synthesis and properties of nuclei at the stability limits, accelerator complex of ion beams of stable and radioactive nuclides, investigations in the field of nuclear physics with neutrons, investigations of condensed matter by modern neutron scattering methods, computational physics, educational program etc.

On the initiative of the JINR and South African institutions, the first South Africa-JINR workshop was held in Franschhoek in January 2020. The 2nd South Africa-JINR Theory Workshop will be held at the Summerstrand South Campus of Nelson Mandela University in Gqeberha during the period December 5-8, 2023. The workshop will include plenary and discussion sessions to forge collaborations on topics in theoretical and computation physics. It is believed that the workshop will initiate opportunities to strengthen existing collaborations and establish new areas in the scientific cooperation among physicists from South Africa and the JINR.
