Heavy Ion Physics: A view from 30,000 feet

Speaker

Dr Jurgen Schukraft (CERN)

Description

This talk will give a brief 'high level' overview for non-experts of Ultra-relativistic Heavy Ion Physic, the study of strongly interacting matter under extreme conditions. First experiments started in the mid '80s with light ions and at low energy fixed target accelerators; with the advent of the ion colliders RHIC and LHC the available energy in the center of mass system has increased by four orders of magnitude in less than 30 years. This talk will give a concise summary of some of the main highlights from SPS to LHC, and venture an outlook on what questions to address in the next 10 to 20 years.
